Believe it or not, some people are already similar to Shelly when it comes to befriending strangers. These people don't cower in crowds. They don't stop and do an "about face" (band nerd) in the middle of the sidewalk when someone else is walking toward them. They don't hinge the "awesomeness" of their day upon whether or not they have to share the elevator or a train seat.
Kate is one of these people. So instead of just talking to someone new and snapping a pic, she took it a monster step further. She invited one of these people to a trivia event with her. No, it wasn't a complete stranger, but it was one of those "I see her a lot at animal-sweater-knitting-class, but we've never really crossed that line into hanging out." (Except substitute "the gym" for "animal-sweater-knitting-class.") So she did it. She figured it would be her way of bettering herself for January's resolution. And the acquaintance said, "Yes!"
Being an outsider to this situation, I think both of these girls deserve a big shiny milkshake for taking this step into real friendshiphood. Cuz I'm pretty sure I would've said something like, "Oh, I'm sorry, I promised my friend (i.e. myself) I'd eat meatloaf in my flannel pjams that night AND I DON'T EVEN FREAKING KNOW YOU, WEIRDO!"
But instead, the invitation was accepted and the two became "real" friends. Bravo, ladies! Bra-vo.
Now I want to clap like a maniac for YOU. Get out there and complete January's resolution yourself! It's the weekend, there's no better time to freak ou-- um, I mean meet a stranger. If I hadn't stepped out of my comfort zone to make a new friend, I wouldn't possess one of my favorite photos of all time.
